WISH THEY WOULD IN HAMMOND That the water supply for the town of Jonesboro is unfit for use is a report of the state board of health. The report states that the water is polluted with sewage. The bad condition of the water is due to shallow wells. Jonesboro owns and operates the waterworks plant, and the town board will at once take steps for drilling deeper wells and securing pure water. Soda J. S. BLACKMUN, Secretary. A. H. TAPPER, Treasurer, THIS IS A PROBLEM YARN; WHO WAS TRIMMED? The Soft Coal Fiend and the Peddlar Swap Horses Crossing Fayette Street. That the gentle art of swapping horses is a practice of by-gone days and is growing extinct was conclusrebutted this morning when a little horse trading deal was pulled off in Fayette street. John Dahlkamp has been disturbthe peace and serenity of the Hammond building ever since bright and early Monday morning by shovcoal into the basement windows He has already put in the entire years output of the mines, judging by the noise he has made. Still John is not satisfied, but continues to make life a burden with a thump, thump, thump of the coal as it goes down the chute into the basement. While John was thus busily en gaged this morning Ruby Diamond drove up and, checking the speed of his team of chargers, called out to the man with the shovel and the be grimed countenance, "Wacha gotter trade?" John looked up from be neath the drooping brim of his straw hat, leaned upon the shovel with his left hand, flirted a solution of perand coal dust from his brow and spake, "Wall--I got these two lovely critters (indicating the beasts inside the flynets in front of his wagon) an' I got four on the grade an' a couple in the barn." This outlay seemed to startle the Jewish peddlar for a minute but, rehis composure he asked the coal teamster if he could be induced to part with either of the animals attached to the wagon, and was givthe information that Dahlkamp would "hate to impose on you with that off hoss. He's lame, but you can have the other one for that big fellow you got there and a dollar to boot,' Diamond looked at the aniwithout leaving his seat and, upon receiving a nudge from Frank Tramp, who sat on the seat beside him, declared the bargain was made. It wasn't three minutes until the horses were switched about and the traders betook themselves to a nearsaloon, where Dahlkamp, his face all wreathed in smiles, insisted on buying the drinks for all present in celebration of his having beat the peddlar on a horse trade." Diamond was not to be outdone, however, and told the dispenser of the liquid joy to "give 'em all one on me. I got the best of that deal or I don't know hoss flesh." When they parted both principals to the transaction were well pleased with their bargain. We wonder if each will be as happy over the deal a week hence. Palace of Sweets CANDIES AND ICE CREAM

When in the woods the bosses go armed, and If the men do not work to suit them they were stripped, and while two of them held a man across a log a third plied a strap or any instrument of torture handy.
