BEING chosen one of 16 sectional winners In the 1949 National 4-H Soil Conservation program was the honor bestowed upon Jimmy Mohr, 19, of Evansville. His splendid record showed that he and his family purchased a 120acre farm that was totally unproductive. With proper soil testing and by addition of necessary lime and other essential minerals, the land has been brought to a high state of productivity. The pastures were all clipped to kill weeds. He used contour lines and terraces to control gullies and erosion. Being short of water, he built a pond to water the cows. A tenacre hay field was tilled after the second cutting. The roots from alfalfa, red clover and grasses'will slow down erosion and nitrogen from legumes will reduce fertUeer Costs. With the present methods of storing and drying of chopped hay, the hay qualities are greatly improved. Jim says they plan to change to a complete grassland farm. Jim has served his club in all offices and as junior leader. He is now enrolled as a freshman at Purdue University in vocational agriculture* He was awarded an all-expense trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago, provided by Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. This activity is conducted under the direction of the Extension Service of the State Agricultural College and USDA cooperating.
