G. P. Walker, agronomist, from Purdue University will bo present to discuss the merits of the various varieties and methods of applying oats. The oats varieties plant seed on March 25th in this plot are Clinton 59, Benton, Ajax, Eaton, Beaver, Columbia and Exeter. The fertilizer plots shows plots with no fertilizer, plots with 300 pounds each of 3-12-12; 6-12-12 and 12-12-12. The Clinton 59 and Benton are medium early, yellow oats with thin hulls and high percentage of groats or “meats.” These are especially adapted for combine harvesting. Straw is very stiff remaining green for several days after head is dry enough for direct combining. The Ajax and Beaver are Canadian varieties which do good under northern conditions but generally lower in test weight and yield than Clinton 59 or Benton under Indiana conditions. This plot is marked and may be seen at anytime but farmers are urged to take a few minutes Wednesday morning to hear Mr. Walker discuss these varieties and other oats growing problems.
