KIDS, EAT LIKE BUGS BUNNY TO AVOID DENTIST
Indianapolis, —■ If youngsters must cat between meals, a dentist said today, they should at least stick to nuts, raw carrots, or fresh fruit instead of candy and soft foods which harm the teeth. Dr. Joseph Volker, dean of the University of Alabama
School of Denistry said betweenmeal eating is “one of the most damnable habits” as far as tooth decay was concerned. Sugar in many children’s diet contribute to tooth decay, he said, and unfortunately “fer-men-etble carbohydrates are so palatable carbohydrates are so palaily available.” Brushing Not Enough Volker participated in the first dental decay control conference at the Indiana University School of Denistry. Dr. John W. Knutsop, chief of the dental section of the U. S. public Health service, said that “in thousands of communities dental decay is occurring in our children’s teeth four to five times faster than it is being corrected.” Dean Maynard K. Hine of the I. U. School of Denistry said that brushing didn’t automatically eliminate decay. “The way most youngsters use the brush” he said, “it contacts only those areas of the tooth surfaces that are naturally selfcleaning. Areas vulnerable to decay are the ones least likely to be distributed by the brush.”
