DEMOTTE UNIT 440 AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY VISITS MARION HOSPITAL
A birthday party for the veterans at Marion hospital, which was held June 9th and sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary’s eleven districts, of the state of Indiana was attended by Mrs. Louetta Coberly, Mrs. Rachel Barker, Mrs. Fred Boissy and Mrs. Bertha Korth of Rosclawn. Lovely refreshments of ice cream and cake were served some 450 patients whose birthday is in the month of June, packets of cigarettes, tobacco and candy bars were also given our veterans. Our legion auxiliary’s hospital aiifes were on hand to serve refreshments to the bed patients who were unable to be present. Lovely trays were delivered through out the various wards to these veterans. The Marion V. A. Hospital Orchestra, which is composed in its entirety of Marion patients entertained the assemblage. Several other acts of fine entertainment were on hand. Eight children from our orphanage at Knights Town performed in excellent style and great talent, all of which was broadcast to the bed patients throughout the hospital. A tour through the craft therapy department was viewed with awe as we saw some of these patiens busy at their looms and lathes turning out crafts of art. It is various articles such as these made by our veterans that your local DeMotte Unit endeavors through the year to help sell for our veterans. They are called service sales. Next on the agenda was a stop at Gas City, to visit one of our rehabilitated veterans, Mr. Glenn Bastian, who fashions and creates lovely bird pictures and beautiful scenes in air brush and oils. We of the DeMotte Unit wish to thank Dr. and Mrs. Robert Y. Oosten, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Starkey and Mrs. Polly Harrington for the fine bundles of magazines numbering 300 pounds, which were delivered to the boys at Marion on the above date, and greatly appreciated.
