Holder Is Seen As Next GOP Chairman

Indianapolis Attorney Regarded As Logical Successor To Springer Indianapolis, May 10. Cale J. Holder, Indianapolis lawyer and a staunch supporter of U. S. Senator William E. Jenner, is expected to be the new Republican State chairman. Usually well-informed sources said today Holder probably would be elected within the next two weeks. H. C. Springer, incumbent chairman, has said he would resign as soon as party leaders can agree on a successor. Holder was one of the original leaders last year in the movement to draft Jenner for Governor. He w'as appointed 11th district chairman about two weeks ago after the election of Jack Innis as Marion county G.O.P. chairman. War Veteran ‘Holder has been active in party affairs in Indianapolis for many years. He is a World war II veteran. The selection of Holder was reported to be acceptable to the wing of the party lead by State Senator Roy Conrad of Monticello. The Jenner forces currently control the state committee. Holder was described as “friendly’’ to U. S. Senator Homer E. Capehart, who is up for renomination next summer. Senator Capehart supported his colleague in Jenner’s unsuccessful bid for the gubernatorial nomination in 1948. Little Opposition Senator Jenner is understood to have told Senator Capehart he Would support him for nomination next year. At this time, at least, Senator is not expected to have serious opposition,“if any, for renomination. Selection of Holder was regarded widely as a harmony move designed to heal deep wounds that resulted from the bitter governorship fight won by Hobart Creighton of Warsaw.
