WHS Red Devils Nip Bombers In Six-Way Meet

At least two Rensselaer track records fell and a third may have gone by the boards Tuesday night as RHS entertained five other track and field squads at their light-bathed field west of town. Wheatfield high’s crack Red Devils kept in the forefront of track and field teams for this section of Indiana by winning the meet. The Devils hit for 64 1-12 points to edge Rensselaer which scored 60. The balance of the points were distributed as follows: Kentland, 37 1-12; Morocco, 23; DeMotte, 19 1-12; Brook, 14 3-4. Harry Riley of Rensselaer established a new , record for the local field when he skimmed upT over the bar in the high jump at five feet, 10 3-4 inches. George Ames, also of Rensselaer, was the other record-crack-er with a mark of 46 feet, 314 inches in the shot put. Williams of Wheatfield may have set a new pole vault mark at 10 feet, 8 inches, but the record for that event is not available at this time. However, it is believed his mark last night set a new record. Moving into the final event of te evening, the half-mile relay, Wheatfield led Rensselaer by 58 ,1-12 to 50. WHS needed only a fifth place in the half-mile relay to assure itself of victory, but got better than that by finishing third, behind Rensselaer and Kentland. Riley bagged two firsts, taking the 220-yard dash in addition to the high jump. George Ames was also a double winner, adding to the broad jump to his shot put first place finish. The meet was strictly a twoteam affair as far as first place - was concerned. Rensselaer lead part of the way, but Wheatfield’s well-balanced squad finally nosed to the front and remained there.
