LAVERNE STROUP UNDERGOES AMPUTATION OF HAND
LaVerne Stroup, 52-year-old manager of the Farm Bureau Kersey elevator of the Jasper county Farm Bureau elevator string, underwent ambutation of his right arm four inches above the wrist at Jasper county hospital March 9. The amputation was performed following mangling of the hand and forearm in the ear corn drag was operating about 4 p.m. Mr. Stroup was attempting to remove shucks from between the sprocket and chain when his glove was caught in the drag and his arm was drawn into the gears. He was alone at the time. His cries attracted the attention of Harold Graham who shut off the machinery. Mr. Stroup is manager of the elevator which was purchased by the Farm Bureau Go-Op from the Babcock interests in June, 1945. Before that he was employed by the Babccok Elevator company and before that he was a rail worker. He is married and has one son and and a daughter.
