Sheriffs And State Police To Co-Operate
Indiana Sheriffs' Association Pledges Support To State Troopers Through Relations Board Sheriff William Weob has pledged full cooperation with Arthur M. Thurston, newly appointed superintendent of state police, and his force of state troopers, it was announced today. W. Pete Anthony, Muncie, president of the Indiana Sheriffs Association, revealed the appointment of a “state police relation’s committee” to confer with state trooper officials concerning cooperative efforts to combat crime and reduce traffic fatalities. Members of the committee are Clifton L. Small, Kokomo, executive secretary of the association; Sheriff Stephen Hipsak, South Bend; Sheriff Clarence Bishop, Portland; Sheriff Joe Brogdon, Anderson; Sheriff John Trierweiler, Terre Haute; and Sheriff Ora Wilson, Richmond. “In as much as neither the state police nor the sheriffs of the various counties can hope to obtain the vast increases in manpower and equipment which are needed to do a fully effective job, we must overcome our handicaps
by working together in every way possible,” Sheriff Anthony said. “Relations between sheriffs and state troopers have been good for the most part, with isolated instances of friction making it appear we are at loggerheads. Actually our problems are the same and there have been many fine examples of close cooperation and outstanding police work resulting from that cooperation. We have confidence in Superintendent Thurston and believe that our relationship will be still further improved.” Sheriff Anthony pointed out that “our state association membership is entirely voluntary and its officers cannot commit every individual to a fixed policy, but the association has made tremendous strides in recent years in bringing about a close working unity among the sheriffs of the state.” He said the. organization will continue its efforts to bring about the same accomplishments in unifying the state troopers and sheriffs. One of the objectives of the association is to help sheriffs in the less populous counties to obtain radio and other modern equipment which would enable them to give state police more help, he said.
