Grand Champ Sells For Less Than Runner-Up

Buyers Do Not Agree With Judges and Pay More For Reserve Champion Chicago, Dec. 2. Judges and buyers at the International Live Stock Exposition disagreed on on the worth of the grand champion Shorthorn bull of the big Chicago show. The grand champion, Scotsdale Bombardier, owned by S. G. Bennett, Georgetown, Ontario, Canada, was sold at auction for $4,800, S2OO less than the price paid for the reserve champion. Last year’s grand champion Shorthorn bull, sold for $9,100. The top bull was sold to Frank W. Harding of Waukesha, Wis., The reserve champion Shorthorn bull, Sunset Bounce, was sold by the worth of the grand chamEldorado, 111., for $5,000. The buyers was Hollis Hanson of Connersville, Ind. In spite of the Bombardiers’ setback, sales of breeding Shorthorns and Herefords brought prices higher than those of last year. Eighty-five Shorthorns sold for a total of $95,210, averaging 120. The average last year was $978. Thirty-five bulls in the group averaged $1,370 and 50 females averaged $943. The latter price was S2OO a head more than lastyear. Top price for a Shorthorn cow was $3,000, paid by Herman Albers, Dixon, 111., for Miss Gipsy Maid. The animal was sold by George Struve and Sons, Manning, la. Top price for a female last year was $2,000. Forty-seven head of Hereford breeders sold for an average of $954. The average last year was $778. Total sales were $44,865. Top price for a Hereford bull was $3,600, paid by G. E. Wilcox, Blue Mound, 111. Former owner of the animal was W. J. Largent, Merkel, Tex. Two Hereford cows brought $3,100 each, the top price for females. Cattle judges today picked the grand champion female AberdeenAngus, “Eileenmere’s Effie,” shown by J. Garrett Talon Farms, Pleasant Plains, 111. Warner Grove Farms, Greenville, Ohio, had the senior champion female of the breed, and Great Oaks Stock Farms, Rochester, Mich., the reserve champion.
