Keener Township Cooperating In CROP Aid Drive
On Thursday evening, Sept. 30 a group of farmers and church leaders gathered at the Rensselaer Christian Church at the invitation of J. A. Carroll, the County Agent and Rev. Ellis J. Veale, co-chairman of District No. 7, and pastor of the church to set up a county organization to promote the Christian Rural Overseas Porgam, frequently referred to as CROP. This is a program organized in 1947 among rural people to help the people in Europe and Asia through contributions of the products of their farms. President Hovde of Purdue University is at the head of the program for the state of Indiana. The program is nationwide in its scope and is the largest program of its kind which the churches have ever promoted in our midst. At the meeting at Rensselaer it was learned that representatives from our area had chosen to make our contribution in terms of soy beans. This was done, they are produced in abundance here. But also because of their high protein food value and because they furnish some much needed oil. Also they are rather easily shipped and can be kept over a comparatively long time. Jasper County will contribute three car loads of soy beans. Neighboring counties also will make their contribution in soy beans. Should some of these go. to China we will in a measure repay them for giving us such a valuable crop. CROP is being promoted by churches everywhere throughout our country and by every church denomination. Rev. W. D. Archibald was appointed at Rensselaer as the chairmen for Keener township. In co-operation with Rev. Frederic Dolfin, Rev. Paul Holtrop, and Rev. Tunis Miersma a meeting was held at the school house on Wednesday evening, October 6, to plan for the solicitation of contributions from Keener township. Rev Frederic Dolfin was elected secretary-treasurer for CROP for Keener township. Those in attendance at the meeting decided that the solicitation through the township would begin next Monday and will be completed as rapidly as possible. Contributions of grain may be made by contributors asking the elevator to dedp the number of bushels Oi £* contributed from what the contributor sells to the elevator or that the elevator may be 1 ’fling for him and crediting it the account with CROP.
