CORNY CONTEST

OrxmvUle, Minn., Aug. 18. Mayor Hubert H. Humphrey of Minneapolis, Democratic-Farm-Labor candidate for U. S. Senator, ate 25 ears of corn in the sweet corn eating contest held at the annual sweet corn festival here yesterday. Another guest, Gov. Luther Youngdahl, ate 19. But neither score was good enough for the championship. Last year’s winner, Ed (King Korn) Kottwitz, Big Stone City, S. D., retained the title by eating 35 ears. He also holds the record of 57 ears. FALSE RACE START La Ciotat, Franck, Aag. 19. Nineteen girls lined up today for a bicycle race. A gun sounded. Eighteen girls sped away. The nineteenth, Marcelle Dagobert, lay on the ground suffering a superficial shoulder wound from a gun fired by an estranged sweetheart. The official starter shrugged his shoulders and put his unused pistol hack in his pocket. Gene Korth, Mel. Struhle and Harold Spencer were in Indianapolis Monday attending the Legion convention.
