AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY DEMOTTE UNIT NO. 440
The seventh annual Girl’s State opened on Wednesday, June 23rd, on the Campus at Indiana State University for the seventh annual meet. It .brought to Bloomington the largest enrollment since the American Legion sponsored this project. From all part of Indiana 380 young ladies who will be seniors in high school next fall, converged on the city and will remain through July Ist. The nine day meet will bring to Bloomington a number of outstanding speakers and personages in Indiana and national government including Judge Donald E. Bowen, Bloomington, of the Indiana Appellate Court. Henry F. Schricker, former governor of In*diana. I. U.’s President Herman B. Wells; and Mrs. Euga Campbell, National Girls State chairman. Many of the meetings were opened to the public and adequate seating space has been provided for the spectators. While on the campus the girls will study the various phases of government and will actually set up a model state government, complete from primary election to the colorful inauguration of the elected governor-hence the name, Hoosier Girls’ State. Mrs. Eva Grigsby Department president, who acted as director in 1947 will be in the office again this year to assist Mrs. Brown and her staff. Girls who arrived Wednesday by bus or train were met at the station and greeted by the Bloomj ington Unit No. 18 of the American Legion Auxiliary. This same committee will furnish transportation to any part of the city. Mrs. Brown greeted the girls Wednesday in city formation in the auditorium of the Business and Economics building. The girls have been assigned to ten mythical cities, each with 38 citizens, Mrs. Louise Young f of Crown Point and department music chairman leader the group in singing. —Miss Marilyn Saurs of DeMotte has been selected by the teachers of our local school on the basis of high scholarship, and pustanding personal ability and character, and sponsored by the DeMotte Unit No. 440 American L-. 0 i .
