Nick Tillema, 80, Of DeMotte Dies Monday Morning

Well Known Man Passes Away After Year's Illness; Services Thursday P.M. Nick Tillema, prominent retired farmer of northern Jasper county, died at the home of his son, 'Aries, in DeMotte at 11:20 o’clock Monday morning. His death followed a year of failing health and a serious * illness of two months. A native of Holland, Mr. Tillema was born March 18, 1868, the son of John Tillema and Aggtie (Sokken) Tillema. During his early life he came to the United States and on April 21, 1897, he was married in Chicago to Katherine Swierenga, who passed away in 1946. Mr. Tillema had lived in Wheatfield and later in DeMotte since 1937. He previously farmed in the vicinity of Platte, S. D. Surviving are the following children: John of Chicago, Mrs. Effie Bierma of Wheatfield, Mrs. Katherine Hubbling of Wheatfield, Mrs. Susie Boltjes of Platte, Henry of Chicago, Aries of DeMotte and Edward and Robert of Wheatfield. One daughter preceded him in death. Other survivors are 23 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Mr. Tillema was a member of the Christian Reformed church of DeMotte, from where services were held at 2 o’clock Thursday with the Rev. Paul F. Holtrop officiating. Burial was at Wheatfield •cemetery.
