JENNER SEES SELF VICTOR ON FIRST BALLOT
Confidence Of Senate r Creates Much Discussion Among State GOP Leaders Indianapolis, Ind., May 27.—A prediction by Senator William E. Jenner that he will be nominated for Governor on the first ballot at the Republican state convention caused much talk among GOP leaders today. Speaking at South Bend last night, Senator Jenner said reports from all sections of the state indicate his nomination on the first ballot and added: “This proves to me a desire on the part of Republicans everywhere for a closely-knit, fighting organization 'which will be free from the influences that have caused defeat in former years.” Senator Jenner also warned against eleventh-hour campaign attacks, saying: “Certain politicians, in a desperate attempt to avoid the defeat which they fear, have made irresponsible charges—and more will come —in an effort to sway the convention from a free choice. “I want to repeat my request made at the outset for a campaign free from personalities and innuendoes which might endanger chances for a smashing Republican victory next November.” •' Another GOP aspirant for Governor, Walter E. Helmke, of Fort Wayne, declared in Hammond last night that he believes in a balanced approach to labor-manage-ment problems. Helmke said: " “As a Republican, I believe in the free enterprise system. However, I do not believe that the system of free enterprise should be so ruthless or so extensive that it is detrimental to labor’s interests. In all controversies between labor and management, careful consideration should be given the respective rights of each. As city attorny of Fort Wayne I had the opportunity to work with labor and management, and found that a sympathetic understanding of their respsctive rights and privileges is absolutely necessary.
