Brown, Badgley Get Stay To November 29
Police Slayers Convicted Here Get Time Extension For Filing Of Briefs Robert Oscar Brown and Frank Badgley, sentenced to death by a Jasper circuit court jury last November 22 for the slaying of two Hammond policemen, John Gerka, and Donald Cook on January 11, 1947, have won their second stay of execution in two months. The Indiana supreme court extended the execution "of the pair to November 29. The two originally were scheduled to die March 19, but were granted a stay until June 19 to allow time for the filing of additional briefs. The court gave the attorneys until July 2 for filing the papers. The attorneys claimed the extra time for filing briefs extended thirteen days beyond the second execution deadline.
