Predict 20 Road Deaths On Holidays
State Vehicle Department Flashes Warning To Motorists To Drive Carefully " Indianapolis, Ind., May 24 Memorial day week end travelers were warned today that holiday motoring deaths may reach 20 in Indiana. Basing his prediction on the experience of the last two years, Col. Robert Rossow, superintendent of state police, said in a four-day period last year 20 persons were killed and 241 others injured in 861 reported accidents. In a similar period in 1946, a total of 780 accidents claimed 19 dead and 180 hurt. ‘‘Thousands of people will leave their homes for a week-end vacation, beginning Friday and continuing through Monday,” he said, in listing potential hazards. Motorists were cautioned to start early to avoid driving dangers heightened by heavy travel. Pleasure seekers at lake and river
resorts were warned against water accidents, and private pland pilots were urged to observe safe flying practices. Memorial day marks the start of the farm weather driving season, Colonel Rossow said, and drivers will have to be more alert to compensate for crowded streets and highways. Car owners were asked to cooperate with the statewide police ‘‘check your car” campaign, now in progress, and have their vehicles placed in top working order.
