HALLECK SAFE SAY LEADERS OF 2ND DISTRICT
Records In Capital Will Be Boost To Congressmen, Observers Predict Logansport, Ind., Jan. 22 An early bird political survey indicates that Republicans of' Indiana’s big Second Congressional District will renominate Representative Charles A. Halleck in the primary election this spring. The Democratic congressional picture is not so clear. In fact, at this early date, there’s hardly any picture at all. But party leaders predict that business will pick up. Up to now, only Republican seriously mentioned as a possible opponent of Representative Halleck is Frederick Landis, Logansport attorney and former Cass County prosecuting attorney. But Landis, himself said today he has not given “any serious thought” to running for,the GOP congressional nomination. “I’m concerned about practicing law,” he added. Republican leaders of this distract say if Landis should run he would do so because of encouragement of a group within the ranks of organized labor. Labor’s heaviest vote in this district is in Cass (Logansport), Tippecanoe (Lafayette) and Porter Counties. Landis ran for the G.O.P. Congressional nomination in 1940, but was defeated by Halleck. G.O.P. leaders believe now that Halleck more than likely will enter the primary election in May without opposition/ But they predict that even if he has opposition he will have easy sledding to regain the nomination. The district party organization is solidly behind him. Since his first election 1935 Halleck has consistently piled up impressive majorities in both primary and general elections. Two years ago in an “off-year” election he defeated Mrs. Margaret Afflis of Delphi by nearly 25,000 votes. Another source of Halleck’s strength in the primary this spring, as the Republicans in the district see it, will be the fact that he has gained national recognition in Washington. The voters, the party folk say, will want to send back to the Capitol a Hoosier who has been elected the Majority Floor Leaders of the House. One leader in the district put it this way: “We’ve recognized Charlie Halleck’s ability all along. Now he’s recognized nationally. Of course we’ll re-nominate—and re-elect—him.” Frank Krucek, Ed Jachim of Wheatfield and August Dusek of North Judson left Tuesday morning for a two week motor trip through the South. Points of interest they will visit will be the caverns in New Mexico and the city of New Orleans in Louisana. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zeck and daughter, Jane, and son-in-law, Roy Van Dam, returned Monday from a few days visit in Lincoln, Nebraska, where they visited Mr. Zeck’s sister and brother. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Stangle were: in Indianapolis and Lafayette over i the week-end. Mr. Stangle attended the Athletic Board meeting in Indianapolis, Saturday. Sunday they visited Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hoffman in Lafayette. Miss Henrietta Kingma is home from school for a few days between semisters. '
