REP HALLECK VOWS FAITH IN CONTROL BILL
Indiana Congressman Positive GOP Measure Will Answer U. S. Need Washington, Jan. 15 Congressman Charles Halleck of Indiana, House majority leader, tonight told the National Small Business Mens’ Association that the success of the Republican anti-in-flati.on bill passed by Congress last month lies in the hands of the administration. “We voted for the bill with the firm belief that the men and women engaged in business know more about their respective problems than do bureaucrats in Washington,’’ Halleck said, “But you know as well as I do that there must be leadership.” “Therefore,” he continued, “I am looking hopefully at the steps being taken by the administration to carry out the purpose of this act of Congress.” He added that the anti-inflation bill, calling for voluntary co-op-eration by industries in combatting inflation, was never intended is the complete answer to the price problem. The government already possessed powers to combat exorbitant prices,” he pointed out, adding that members of Congress voted for the anti-inflation bill with confidence “in businessmen co-operating in the interest of all the people:” Halleck said he felt ‘right at home” in the gathering of small businessmen, reminding them that he was chairman of the first small business committee in Congress, an unofficial one set up in 1940 by the ten Republican minority to study the plight of small businesses. Later, the House established an official committee on small business, of which he was ranking Republican member.
