Rifles Defeat Tefft For Tourney Championship; LaCrosse, San Pierre Lose In Semi-Finals The Scores: Tefft, 33; LaCrosse, 31. Remington, 42; San Pierre, 35. Remington, 50; Tefft, 29. Fair Oaks 25; Remington 30. San Pierre 42; Wheatfield 34. DeMotte 34; LaCrosse 38. Mt. Ayr 35; Tefft 36. Remington, sitting in as a replacement for St., Joseph’s college which has abandoned high school basketball, romped away with the Kankakee Valley tournament held at Fail' Oaks by dumping Tefft in the title game, 50-29. Previous to the climax, Tefft had waded past LaCrosse, 33-31 in a hot skirmish, and Remington tossed San Pierre to the sidelines 42-35. Tiny Tefft, living up to its pre-tourney notices as a giant killer, felt the effects of two blistering games in two days and was not up to its usual form when the chips-down contest arrived. Remington had not extended itself too much in the afternoon round, as it dumped San Pierre and went into the final contest in a fresher state than the tired Tefft-ites. The tournament began Thursday night with eight teams competing. The field was reduced to four with two games Friday night, which set up* the semi-finals round. The gun was packed for each session. Fair Oaks proved a fine host. The box scores: Tefft (31) B FT L. Ketchum i 0 0 G. Stalbaum 17 ' 1 4 H. Stalbaum 5 1 Robbins 1 1 J. Stalbaum 3 1 Benkovich 1 0 Total . 11 20 Remington (50) .. Both games were sizzlers, as the scores indicate, with the decision in each instance hanging in the balance until the fanil seconds. Mt. Ayr went into a stall against Tefft in the final three minutes and it probably cost them a victory. Tefft broke through to rack up a lead and a stall which outlasted the clock. LaCrosse and DeMotte also whanged away at one another throughout and it was not until just before the gun that LaCrosse flipped what proved to be the winning bucket. Both games were a real basketball treat. All four clubs showed great ball. They were the kind of games that were a shame for either club to have to lose. Ekren placed Mt. Ayr’s scoring with 15 points and E. Stalbaum lead for Tefft with ten. Rowen was the top scorer for DeMotte with 14 tallies and Fritts came through with 16 for LaCrosse.
