DEMOTTE IN NEW YEAR STORM AREA
January Ist, 1948 will long be remembered in this and surrounding communities as the day of many experiences, most of them caused by the weather. Rain, snow, sleet, lightening, thunder, icy roads, no electricity, no telephone service—all on the first day of the new year. Many homes were without heat, water and cooking facilities all day—some until late Tuesday. Families were forced to move in with friends or relatives. Power lines snapped under their icy loads. Electricity went of fabout 8:30 in most of DeMotte and came on again in some parts of town about 6 o’clock. Icy highways caused a number of minor accidents. The storm area covered thousands of miles leaving disrupted travel and communication and causing millions of dollars damage.
