Firms Stumble On Wage Law
Half Those Inspected In Indiana Are Found To Be At Fault Nearly half of all Indiana business establishments inspected by the United States Labor Department’s wage and hour division during the last six months of 1946 were found to be violating the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act. Results of the inspections were announced in Chicago yesterday by Thomas D. O’Malley, regional director of the wage, hour and public contracts division of the Labor Department. Major infractions of the act were violations of the minimum wages, overtime and child labor provisions, O’Malley said. As a result of the inspections, approximately 100 Indiana employers were ordered or agi'eed to pay $24,402 in back wages illegally withheld from 200 employes, he added. The Labor Department officials said that while the percentage of violations was heavy, it did not mean that half of all Indiana employers were in violation. “We schedule a large part of our inspections in industries and areas in which there is evidence that violations may exist,’’ O’Malley said.
