FILING PERIOD FOR TAXES COMES IN JANUARY

January Ist brings another filing period with many additional duties on the various internal revenue offices throughout the state. Last year there were over a million and a half income tax returns filed from January 1 through March 15 and. inasmuch as there has been no change in the law, approximately that number will be filed this year. F. Shirley Wilcox, collector of internal revenue for the district of Indiana, advised that his force of field deputies was redu#*H by 92 in July and August' through the cut in appropriations and many others have resigned because of failure to pass the recent civil service examination. He further stated it was impossible to hire and train new men replace them to assist taxpayers during the filing period. Farmers are required under the law to file their 1947 estimate by January 15, or, if they desire, they may file their complete return by that date, thus eliminating the necessity of filing an es-t-imate.,w—-./, ~ - January 15 is, also the date on which the fourth installment of the 1947 estimate tax is due to he paid. Also, any persons who have underestimated their tax by 20 percent sould file either an amended estimate or their final return by that date.
