Indiana 10th In Population; Up Two Places
Indiana jumped from 12th to 10th state in population, provisional estimates of the Census Bureau revealed Saturday. Indiana’s gain of 12.6 per cent, an estimated 430,204 since the 1940 census, passed North Carolina and Missouri. Estimated population of Indiana now is 3,858,000. All but eleven of the 48 states gained population during the seven-year period. No gains were reported in North and South Dakota, Nebraska, West Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Montana and Idaho. The provisional census estimate excluded members of the armed forces serving overseas. New York was first with 14,092.000 and Nebraska last with 140,000. Total estimated United States population is 143,382,000. In order the ten are New York, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Indiana.
