JUMP OF 8¢ OVER CURRENT RATE CITY $4
Rensselaer Taxpayers Will Pay 80c Per SIOO More Than This Year If Proposal Stands Mr. John Taxpayer of Jasper county will pay 8c per hundred more SIOO valuation for the privilege of-residing and owning property in the county next year than he is paying this year, if the rate adopted at a meeting here yesterday stands up. And there is no reason to believe it will not, for seldom does the state department "change the figures of their field > I'he county rate for next year as it stands at this moment is 08c compared to the 00c county rate for this year. The county reveniu rate was set yesterday at 44.5 c, a reduction of 3c from the proposed rate, hut 2c more than the current rate. The welfare rate was set at 23.5 c, a cut of 2c, hut six cents above the current rate. Add those two rates and you have 08c. To that 68c you may add the township tax, state tax etc., and in case you live in a city or town you may also add the rate of that corporation to determine the total rate you will pay per SIOO assessed valuation. v The county rate for this year is 00c—42.5c for county revenue and 17.5 c for welfare. Rensselaer Rate $4 As things stand right at this minute residents of Rensselaer will pay $4 per hundred in contrast to the present $3.20 rate, which means that next year when you go to play a tattoo on the county treasurer’s cash register you must dump in 80c more for each SIOO of your wealth. The climbs are not out of line with the rest of the state. They were to be expected in the fgce of rising costs. Necessary materials purchased by the county are much higher, wages are higher and the state rate is; up a couple (if cents. It costs' much more to buy supplies for the county farm, the jail, the hospital ! and it costs more to maintain he i highways, etc. The increase is a J natural reaction. Representing the state at yesterday’s hearing were Vere Kelley and Edward Landgriebe of the state hoard of |ax commissioners j and Ralph Jarvis of the taxpay- J els’ association. The state representatives re- | commended certain slashes, but on the whole the cuttings were conservative. In two or three cases the figures were allowed to stand. , Following are the recommendations made by the state fieldmen: Jasper county Revenue fund cut from 47.5 c to 44.5 c.
