TON LITTER PROJECT PROVES AID TO INCREASED PIG RETURNS
The ton litter project has been of the greatest practical influence in Indiana for increased returns jter litter of pigs. In 194 G there were 55*1 litters that weighed from a ton to almost two tons per litter at six months old. Also each year some members weigh their eritjre "herds. Last year Virgil Engermeier of Posey county won the E. J. Barker trophy for having produced the heaviest average per weight per litter, 2398 pounds, in 175' days. There were 97 pigs raised in nine litters. The Hoosier ton litter club is* a practical project. The, breeding of the hogs, feeding and management and care are all done by the farmer. This is learning by doing says J. A. Carroll County Agricultural Agent. Every effort is being made to obtain the largest enrollment in 1947 in., the history of the club. Every breeder of purebred hogs, market hog farmers, 4-11 pig club members and boys in vocational classes are urged to enroll litters of nine or more pigs. The litters need not be fenced off by themselves but may be raised in the rcgldar herd of spring pigs. Call at your county agricultural agents office fora leaflet of suggestions by John Schwab, State Leader of the club. Cold medals are awarded for littefs weighing 2000 i pounds or mo lie when 175 days old j and silver and bronze medals for i those weighing 1700 pounds and j less than a ton.
