‘Desert Room’ Helps Science Combat Rust

. PHILADELPHIA. Scientists have duplicated the climate of the great southwest desert in tills city to fight off the ravages of rust and corrosion. A vaulted chamber where the temperature is always 15 degrees, with relative humidity of less than 10 per cent, has been installed at the SKF ball and roller bearing plants. Metallurgists say these readings duplicate a midsummer day in the desert, with low humidity and heat combined to produce pleasant dryness. Millions of anti-friction bearings used throughout the United States industry are stored temporarily in the “desert room” until they can be packed in oil for shipments.
