County’s No. 1 Draftee Is Home
James Edward Steffel Arrives From Southwest Pacific; His Was First Name Drawn James Edward- Steffel, Jasper county’s No. 1 draftee, is back home with a discharge from the armed service which he entered December 26, 1944. | Steffel’s No. in the Conscription Derby of October 29, 1940, was 158, the first that came out the hopper at Washington, D. C., with Secretary of War Stimson doing the drawing. However, he was not called to duty until more than two years later. Steffel reported to Selective Service Clerk G. M. Robinson this afternoon to advise him -that he is back in the civilian ranks. He was a member of the 753rd AAA Gun Battalion, Co. B. He was in the Pacific theatre for more than a year. Steffel is unmarried and was 25 years old when his number was drawn. His home is in Gillam township. Les Wagoner’s number was the second drawn and Kenneth Ford’s was the third to come out of the hcopper.
