Housewives To Get Break On Turkeys
Price Controls Have Forced The Price of Fowl Below Old OPA Ceilings For Birds Chicago, Nov. 19 Housewives were promised a break today in the price of turkeys for their Thankgiving Day and Christmas dinners. Poultry dealers revealed that new supplies of meat following the end of price controls have forced the price of turkeys to dip below the old OPA ceilings for the birds. On Oct. 1, during the meat famine, young men turkeys were quoted at 50 cents a pound. Young toms under 20 pounds sold at 44 cents and those over 20 pounds sold at 40 cents. At that time, because other meats were not available, turkey was often the main meat item on many menus. Then on Oct. 15, as meat controls were removed, young hends dropped 5 cents a pound. A month later, the official live paultry quotes on turkeys were: young hens, 40 to 41 cents; younj? toms under 20 pounds, 31 to 32 cents; those over 20 pounds, 27 to 28 cents. Now, with 79,150,000 pounds of turkey in cold storage, compared with 42,722,000 pounds last year, observers predicted a further drop in prices.
