All County, State GOP Entries Win
Halleck Rolls Up 1956 Majority Over Mrs. Afflis; Webb In By 1103; Critser By 1238 Jasper county joined in the resounding triump of the Republican party Tuesday that left the shattered remains of the New Deal strung from coast to coast, and the House of flepresentatives, and probably the Senate, too, booked for control by the G. O. P. In giving all county, state and national candidates its support, Jasper county ran true to its tradition. It was the same old Republican bulwark yesterday that it has been since time immeorial with one exception— in 1932 when Franklin D. Roosevelt the charge that saw the county lose for the time being much of its true political complexion.
Rolling along with the tide that swept the nation into the Republicans’ hands yesterday, Jasper county yesterday gave smashing majorities to the GOP candidates, excluding three townships which gave the nod to Democrat trustee candidates. Other than that it as was a Republican straight. Halleck Comes Thru Keeping untarnished his record of never meeting with a political ' defeat since the time he first began to campaign as a younthfui lawyer here, Congressman Charles A. Halleck cantered through to a wide •win over Mrs. Margaret Afflis of Delphi. (The district figures are not available to us at this time, but it is reported that every county was won by the Rensselaer crusader, who stands pretty good chance of being next Speaker of the House. Halleck’s margin was 1956, a little shy of his usual majority ,due> to the concentration placed on this race to the exclusion of many others. Riding along with Halleck with increased majorities were William Jenner, who gave ex-Gover-nor Clifford' Townsend an overwhelming defeat in the Senate race; State Senator John Van Ness and State Joint Representive Howard Heistand, who won by big margins; and all those other state candidates to whom Jasper county gave such sterling support. Critser, Webb Win In the only two county contest batted up for the voters here Russell Critser, second district commissioner turned, back the challenge of his democrat opponent,, Roy Williams, of this city by a margin of 1238 votes. And stringing along with the procession was influenza-stricken William Webb, who won the sheriff’s toga by whipping Byrom Phegley, also of Rensselaer by a 1103-vote margin. With the exception of a very instances, the Republican candidates won every precinct. Mrs. Afflis won a pair from Rep. Halleck, Gilliam and East Union. Some of the other candidates were tripped in a precinct spot or two, but other than that it was not a case of who would win but by how much. '4, Washburn Leads Dr. R. N. Washburn, Coroner candidate, led the ticket with a 4048 vote tally. He was unoposed. The other leaders in the ballot, all unopposed, were Attorney Robert Wright, who picked up 4,038 votes for Prosecuting attorney, Henry Toben treasurer candidate, with 4024; Ivan Carson clerk candidate had 4,015, and the rest of the unopposed candidates approached those figures. Mr. Bernard L. Klaese, representative of Bethesda Sanatorium will show two reels of pictures, one dealing with the Sanitorium at Bethesda and the other showing the beauty of nature in the state of Colarado. Both reels are in technicolor. The meeting is scheduled for Friday evening, November 8, at 7:45. The public is invited. Mrs. Steve Antal of Wheatfield entered the Jasper County hospital Monday for medical attention.
