William Tanis Dies In Hammond Oct. 20
William Tanis, a brother of Mrs. Ed DeVries of DeMotte, died at St. Margaret’s hospital of Hammond Sunday, October 20, from injuries received from a fall while doing Carpenter work. The injuries were received three and a half weeks previous and were not thought so serious but in less than a week pneumonia set in and it was found a lung was punctured by one of the broken ribs. He steadily grew weaker. Mr. Tanis was born 54 years ago, near Three Oaks, Michigan, the son of Peter and Elsie Tanis. He spent most of his life in Munster and Lansing. He also lived in DeMotte for several years on the place now known as Melchert’s Hatchery. He was a member of the American Reformed Church while here in DeMotte and active in some of its organizations. The last several years he made his home in Lansing with his mother, Mrs. Elsie Tanis, and his youngest brother Cornelius. He was a veteran of World War I. The funeral services were held Wednesday, October 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the hdme and at 2 p.m. at the Lansing Grace Reformed Church. Those left to mourn his passing besides his mother, brother Cornelius and sister of DeMotte are brothers, Morris of Lansing, Peter of Munster, and Paul of near Crown Point. A few uncles and aunts, and counsins and many nieces and nephews, some of DeMotte, paid their respects by attending the last rites.
