DEMOTTE HIGH SCHOOL

DeMotte High School band has started, the 1946 school year with a large enrollment and a new band leader, Mr. Stivers. Under his instructions we are learning to march while playing our instruments, also the formation of letvs and figures. Band rehearsals are one period a day and snnic evenings. We would like to thank the businessmen and our friends who donated to the band boosters The total amount collected was $215. V. e used this money to buy a new French horn and a bell lyre. Mr. Stivers gave awards of small pins representing the horn they played *o the band members who collected the most money. The first prize a'wards were given to Dolores DeVries, Ruth Speechley, Don Fieldhouse and the second prize award was given to Bill Unzicker. Awards of pins shaped as music lyres were given to Pauline Kingma and Ed Wilkie for decorating the drums Other awards that will be given this year are to freshmen and sophomores a minor award, and seniors, a major award. Our band gave a concert at the Homecoming celebration Friday afternoon and we also played at the first Parent-Teacher’s meeting. Everyone is invited to watch our band march and play at the football game w’ith Fair Oaks Friday evening, October 11, 1946. —Ruth Speechley Wm. Ely sailed Wednesday, Oct. 9 . for Poland on the De Pauw’ Victory, with a load of horses sent through the UNRRA, sponsored by Brethem churches.
