EDITORIAL BRIEFS

We believe that Uncle Sam can be a friend to ail other nations without -being an easy mark; we believe that Uncle Sam can give assistance to foreign peoples without giving the shirt off his own back; we believe that Unde Sam can be firm and strong without being a buUy; and we believe that Uncle Sam can be a force for good all over the world without neglecting the folks at home. But we don't believe Uncle SaaQ*apn do these things without a Republican Congress. . - By Weatherstripping all of the 385 windows in the statehouse, a saving of $786 in heat bills from. January 23, 1945, to June 1 1946 m compared to the previous comparable 'period, was affected. Just another little example of economy under a Republican state administration.

NEARLY 300,000 VETERANS LICENSED TO HUNT AND FISH

Indianapolis, Ind., Sept. 27 With county tabulations in, the number of free hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses given to veterans, approached the 300,000 mark today, according to Donald R. Hughes, director of the Fi.-.h ■and Game Division of the Department of Conservation. From January 1 to September 1, a total of 269,815 licenses had been issued to veterans, free of change. Marion county veterans obtained the licenses, and. 10,500 from Vigo county now hold the permits. These free permits entitle the bearer to hunt, fish and trap birds and game, in acordance with the laws of the state of Indiana. They are permanent permits, and need not be renewed by the veterans who hold them. Governor Ralph F. Gates recently pointed out that the issuance of these permits is “one small way the state can partially repay our veterans the tremendous debt we owe them.”

FENCE REPAIR HEADS EARLY WINTER SCHEDULE

Fence repair will head early winter work schedules on Indiana Farms. Farmers having black locust, osage orange or red cedar on their farms have the ideal pots, but the average central Indiana farmer will either need to purchase posts or use softer matererials from his own woods. These softer species are more liable to decay and, if they are used, J. L. Van Camp. Purdue University extension forester recommends that they be treated with a good preservation in order to avoid replacement in a few years. A new material pentachlophenal has been found successful for the cold soak method of application

of preserving fence posts and is now carried by most of the farm supply stores. The material as purchased is in concentrated form and may be diluted with kerosene. The posts which are soaked 24 hours in this solution in an oil durm or in some other similar tank airranemengt have been found to be as well preserved as those treated with the hot and cold creosote bath method. It should be noted that only the non-resistant woods should be treated. Good black locust, osage orange, or good heartwood of red cedar do not require treatment since the benefits are too small to pay for the added cost. However, when using such woods as red oak or even softer species such as cotton wood, sycamore,
