NEWS OF OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN
_ MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Oct. 17 —Cpl. James J. Kerney, Jr., 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Kerney, Box 104, DeMotte, Ind., has returned from service outside the continental United States and is now being processed through the Army. Ground „.and Service Forces Redistribution Station in Miami Beach, where his next assignment will be determined. Cpl. Kerney served 24 months as a communication non-commis-sioned officer in the Canal Zone theatre of operations. Army Ground and Service Forces Redistribution Stations are located in various parts of the United States. Military personnel returning from overseas are processed through these stations before assignment to military organizations and installations within the United States. During the period that returnees stay at an Army, Ground and Service Forces Redistribution Station, they are given a painstaking occupational and physical classification as well as physical and dental reconditioning together with various lectures designed to reorient men recently returned from combat areas. This processing is carried on without haste in pleasant surroundings conductive to mental <id phyiscal relaxation. Before entering the serlvce Cpl. Kerney was a farmer. He became a member of the Armed Forces on Aug. 6, 1942. FIFTEENTH ARMY AIR FORCE —Sgt. Dale W. Schwanke, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schwanke, Rt. No. 1, DeMotte, Indiana, has been awarded the second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster for the Air Medal, it was announced by the „15th Army Air Force Headquarters. In the words of the citation, Sgt. Schwanke, aerial gunner, was awarded the cluster ‘ “for meritorious achievement while participating in ustained operational activities igainst the enemy.” Sgt. Schwanke is stationed in Italy with a Liberator bombardment group of the 15th Army Air Force which has been bombing German held targets in Europe. Dale has been promoted to the grade of staff sergeant, it was announced by 15th Army Air Force Headquarters. Sgt. Schwanke was inducted into the Army Dec. 6, 1943. - ~ O' NETHERLANDS, East Indies —Just a few lines to inform you of my new address. I sure appreciate the KVP very much.
