We received our ribbons, record books, and awards, and prizes were given by the Farm Bureau in interest of the 4-H Club. Bill Hoffman gave a short talk on his winnings on open entries. Bill was awarded 12 blue ribbons, Ist place; 12 red ribbons, 2nd place and 3 white ribbons, 3rd place. Pauline Kingma was awarded the Rotary Cup by the Club of Rensselaer, a result of her garden project. She was awarded a free trip to the State Fair on her Food Preparation project. The girl’s club completed 79% of their work. Those completing their work did a fine job. The lowest ribbon was third place and lowest grade on local judging contest was “C.” We are asking more boys and girls to join the 4-H, however, Keener Township has certainly done its share this past year. Come on boys and girls—join now—raise the enrollment* The age limit is 10 to 21. Shhhh! Yehuti Is Back Yehuti has been scouting around the Hebron Theater on Sunday nights lately. He saw Gwen B. and Sam K. there. Others seen were: Dorothy M. and Bernice T. with the Myers brothers. Did you notice how much Sinmon N. talks to Irene M. in the assembly ? Looks serious. Alice R. keeps Don P. pretty busy, too. Don says he is a wo-man-hater, but his actions speak louder than his w r ords. Biddy had a big thrill Sunday night, too. By ‘a thrill’ we mean Sig B. Eleanor is always flirting with the boys, did you notice. Her latest heart-throb is Bud M. We saw some of those Bth graders having a good time at noon lately. Among them were Don F. and Ruth S., and Byrne S., and June M. From what I heard the lovebug really bit. Kathleen, how are you and Junior K. getting along? We thought it was Denny S., Kathleen. After the show Sunday night we saw Ray M./ and Beatrice S. walk out of the theatre together. Looks suspicious! Rhoda wants to know why Howard H. isn’t at school more often. Don’t worry too much, Rhoda.

Football Back your home-town team Saturday at St. Joe! The game begins at 2 p. m. This proves to be a good game, so come and see it! Freshman Initiation The Senior Class of DeMotte High School will initiate the Freshmen Class, Wednesday and Wednesday night, September 27, 1944. The Sophomores and the Juniors will have to pay 10c admission to get in to see the fiendish ideas we are going to use on the “Freshies.” If you should happen to see some person going around chained together, carrying pick-axes, they aren’t really hardened criminals but, innocent victims of the Senior Class. DeMotte will also have some freshly cleaned side walks because we are going to make some of the Freshmen scrub the walks with a toothbrush. We will also find out how much sidewalk DeMotte has because someone is going to measure the walks with a 6-inch rule. The new teachers will also be initiated Wednesday night. If they don’t come dressed as we tell them to, they will have. to pay our class 50c as a fine. Our new teachers are: Miss Rolling, Miss Mann, Miss Gundy, Miss Hass, and Mr. Moore. We’re going to give them the “works.” Bth Grade News The Bth grade have been giving talks in English Class. We are learning to speak before an audience. The girls in Home Economics cooked for the first time this week. They prepared creamed peas on toast, and after eating it, admitted that it was good, even though they did make it. The Bth grade had a weinner roast September 19, at Belstra’s woods. We started at 6 o’clock and it ended at 10 o’clock. A good time was had by all. 6th Grade News One day last week we had fun weighing and measuring ourselves. We plan to do it again sometime near Christmas to see if we have gained and grown taller. On October 2, we will tune in our radio and listen to “School Time” for 15 minutes. We plan to listen every day we are sure we will enjoy it. There is a small turtle living in our room. His master is John Klip. He eats flies for breakfast, dinner, and supper. A new girl entered school in our room this week. She went to school in Chicago last year. Her name is Glendora Swanson.
