Rise in 1944 Corn Acreage Calls for More Fertilizer
CHICAGO.—A wartime upsurge in 1944 corn plantings that will add 2,721,000 acres to the crop in 10 Midwestern states is indicated this year, according to a statement made public here by the Middle West Soil Improvement Committee. “Total indicated plantings in these 10 states are estimated at 51,161,000 acres this year, compared with 48,443,000 acres In 1943,“ the statement points out. “This vast acreage means that an increasing demand will be made on the soil fertility of the Corn Belt to produce bumper wartime crops of hybrid corn. As a result a greater need for fertilizer is created not only to help produce bigger yields, bat to replace soil wealth removed by the crop.“
