Army Seeks Aid Of High Schools It sent to principals of 50,000 public, private and parochial schools outlines of five courses which could be offered to students and in night clas ses to older men facing induction. The course will give students basic knowledge of electricity, radio, shop work, machines or automotive mechanics.

“Our rapidly growing army is a complex machine,” wrote Secretary of War Stimson in a foreword. “All of its parts, material and human, must be perfectly co-ordinated toward the achievement of victory over our enemy. Co-ordination means above all, knowledge and skill on the part of every soldier in the use of mechan isms of many kinds?’ The secretary added that “by doing this job well, the schools will free resources of the army for specialized technical training?’ He said that outlines constituted an “official pre-induc-tion training course?’ Many high schools already are conducting similar courses and some have incorporated such training in high schooL Victory Corps programs. As an example of the benefit of the courses, the War De-

partment said the 90-hour course would provide basic know ledge for 151 army assignments, teletype operator, field lineman, field telephone operator. radio operator, searchlight operator, bombsight mechanic and signal communications specialists. Other courses include those in shop work, leading to 188 army jobs; machines, pointing to 226 assignments; automotive mechanics, 50, and radio specialists, 35 jobs. Dr. Clement T. Malan, state

superintendent of public instruction said that the specialist training program planned by the War Department is already well organized in most Indiana schools, including those in Indianapolis. The department started working on the program several months ago. Most of it has been incorporated in high school Victory Corps training programs, Dr. Malan said.
