Welcome at a Housewarming—Honey Twist Rolls
Housewarming Time Soft, sweet, crusty rolls, a fruity coffee cake, plate of cookies,
tempting sandwiches in crescent, diamond, circle or heart shapes, coffee, tea or cider from which to choose your drink—these
form the basis of the refreshments for a housewarming. The event isn’t lavish, it’s simple, sincere and warm with friendliness for you’ve gathered to greet your friends in their new home. Whether you’ve planned the housewarming as a surprise to the family in their new home, or whether you’re inviting friends to an “at home’’ in your own home, keep everything as simple as possible. If you have many coming, ask some earlier and others later so the house

will never be too crowded. No entertainment need be planned for everyone will want to inspect the house or apartment and have a light snack before leaving perhaps. Clever invitations can be sent out by using a miniature plan of the house, a rough drawing or silhouette of the house and writing the invitation inside or out as it best fits. All refreshments can be placed on a table set simply with a plain cloth and attractive flowers. Teenage girls will enjoy helping at the table pouring coffee or tea and helping fill the trays of rolls and sandwiches as they're used. Hot rolls with the smell of the oven still on them will spell a grand welcome, especially when your guests come in from frostnipped outdoors: •Sweet Bow Knot Rolls. (Makes 2 1/2 dozen) 1 cup milk 1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 2 cakes compressed yeast l/4 cup lukewarm water 2 eggs 4 1/2 cups sifted flour (about) Scald milk and pour over butter, sugar and salt. Crumble yeast into water to soften. Cool milk to lukewarm, add yeast, beaten eggs and 2 cups flour. Beat well. Add enough flour to make a soft dough. Turn out on a floured board and knead until smooth. Form into a ball and place in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise until double in bulk. When light, knead down and shape into long strands. 6 inches long, 1/2 inch in diameter. Tie these strands into a single looped knot. Place on greased baking sheet and let rise until doubled. Bake in a moderate (375-degree) oven, 15 to 20 minutes. Brush with powdered sugar icing and sprinkle with chopped nuts. •Honey Twists. (Makes 2 1/2 dozen) Use the same ingredients as in Sweet Bow Knot Rolls. Soften yeast

in lukewarm water. Scald milk, add butter, sugar and salt. Cool to lukewarm and add enough flour to make a thick batter. Add yeast
and brush over Twists before baking. *Fruited Coffee Cake. (Makes 1 large ring) 1 cake yeast 1/2 cup lukewarm potato water 6 cups flour, sifted 1 cup lukewarm water 1 teaspoon lemon extract 1 cup shortening or butter 1 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 3/4 pound large raisins 3/4 cup currants 1/8 pound candied citron 1/8 pound candied lemon peel Soften yeast in potato water, add 1 cup flour and warm water. Let rise. Cut shortening into remaining flour, add remaining ingredients then combine with first mixture. Let rise until double. Shape into large, buttered ring or loaf and let rise until doubled in bulk. Bake in a moderate (350-degree) oven 1 hour. Frost with a powdered sugar icing and sprinkle with chopped or shredded nuts. Here are some cookies that are as delightful as homespun. They’re
especially nice for housewarming because the recipe makes a large quantity and you won’t be able to count consumption on them. The blend
ing of fruits with spices makes this a popular cookie: Cape Elizabeth Cookies. (Makes 3 1/2 dozen medium) 1/2 cup butter 1 cup brown sugar 1 egg 5 tablespoons milk 1 1/2 cups flour 1 .cup rolled oats 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon allspice 1/2 cup pineapple cut into shreds, drained 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped 1/2 cup raisins 3 tablespoons grated orange rind Combine sugar and butter, add egg and milk, then dry ingredients. Last of all add the fruit and nuts. Drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheet. Bake in a moderate (375degree) oven 8 minutes. Here are some tempting sandwich combinations for the sandwich platter. Made in crescent, star, heart or triangle shapes they’ll be one of the most popular numbers at the housewarming: •Assorted Sandwiches. Flaked tuna or salmon seasoned with mayonnaise, lemon juice, and butter. Mashed sardines, lemon juice, chili sauce. Mashed liverwurst with chili sauce. Peanut butter and chopped, cooked bacon. Cooked ham ground with sweet pickle, moistened with mayonnaise. Cream cheese with orange marmalade or cranberry jelly. Sliced American cheese, thinly sliced fried ham, mustard. Cream cheese and honey. Peanut butter, lemon juice and mashed banana.

Three years ago, when I was 18,” writes Janine, “my chum Maude and I thought we were deeply in love. Our two boy friends took us everywhere, dancing, skiing, to movies and night clubs, and we felt there was no harm in the intimate relationship that naturally resulted. I can truly say that no thought of hesitation or guilt ever crossed my mind. “When I became engaged last year, however, I told Dave of that early affair. He immediately assured me that he was no angel and had not expected me to be one, and that he felt that sort of thing ought to be forgotten. “Maude was also married some weeks ago, and after her honeymoon she and her husband came to us for their first dinner party as married people. We had a table of eight and everything went perfectly, except that Dave began to tease her, and to my horror mentioned the name of the man with whom Maude had been in love and asked her if she ever saw him. “All this mystified Maude’s husband. Maude called me up in a perfect panic the next day, saying she had not told Rod anything of her early affair and that Dave had simply infuriated her by his teasing talk. Immediately I told Dave he said that he would of course not go on with it, and added that he would never have thought Maude was that sort of a girl. Caused a Quarrel. “You can imagine how this made me feel! I was so mad that we had what Dave called 5 our first knock-down-and-drag-out fight, but we got over it and were friends again and decided to forget the whole thing and start fresh. But a day or two later he asked me how long my intimate relationship with my first sweetheart had gone on. I answered only for about three months, and nothing more was said. “Yesterday morning the paper mentioned the fact that Maude is on the women's committee to provide amusement for the men in camps, and Dave made a sneering reference to it; he said this was only in fun. But later Maude sent me a brief cold note, saying that. they could not come to a buffet party that we are giving after the big football game, and I know they have given two dinners at least in the last month, but we have not been asked to their house yet, I am afraid David has carried his fun too far. “Maude is my oldest friend, and we have talked for years of the pleasure we would have as brides doing our shopping and discussing our housekeeping together. Can you make any suggestion that may save me from losing her friendship and influencing Dave not to tease her or remind her again of the past? A Fatal Flaw A teasing husband, my dear Janine, is a much more serious matter than it sounds. Impulses toward murder, theft, arson and forgery are kept in order by the law, and by a man’s natural fear of punishment. But teasing is a fatal flaw in the relationship between married persons, and I don’t know of any cure. Teasing is innate cruelty seeking an outlet. It veils its intention

Kathleen Norris Says: Teasing Is Innate Cruelty
Illustration of two women in dresses looking angrily at a man in a suit.
When Maude and her husband came to us for their first dinner party as manned people Dave, my husband, began teasing her. To my horror, he mentioned the name of the man with whom Maude had been in love.

No one- not even the teaser himself escapes the consequences of the hints that are dropped “all in fun." It's not fun for anyone concerned, when a husband begins to suspect that the jokes about his wife may have some basis in truth. It's not fun for anyone, when a wife loses her best friend because her husband just can't resist the temptation to make personal remarks. Kathleen Norris believes that those who enjoy teasing others have in their makeup a streak of real cruelty. “ Teasing," she says, “is innate cruelty seeking an outlet." Don't be deceived by the fact that it is supposed to be a joke.
to sting and hurt under a merry mask of fun. It is always “just fooling.’’ When he carelessly. and laughingly has threatened the actual foundations of a marriage, as Dave in his light-hearted banter with Maude, he retreats, coward-fashion. Dave pretends not to realize that he may have started suspicions in the mind of Maude’s husband, May Regret Her Secrecy. You.; were- smarter than Maude in that you made a clean breast of your own early weakness in the safety of engagement days, when Dave was so anxious to win you that nothing you could have done as a girl would deter him. Maude chose to keep her secret, and she may yet live to regret the deception. You had better give up the hope of continuing your friendship with Maude; young wives almost always have to sacrifice their school-girl friendships to the claims of husbands, and you will be no worse off than the others. Make new friends, devote yourself—as I am sure you are devoting yourself—to thp fulltime job of keeping Dave happy and building for you both a sound and successful marriage But if he continues his teasing, and extends it pretty generally to all your friends, one way to spike his guns is to acknowledge cheerfully that David isn’t happy unless he’s teasing someone. Say something like ‘He’ll tell you that your children are undersized, Tom, and that if you’d been as smart as he is you wouldn’t have had to pay that speeding fine, and that he knows you and Betty came here to dinner to get our insurance, but don’t take it seriously. Dave is a darling in spite of it all.” No Perfect Solution. This makes what ammunition Dave has in store decidedly wet. But it is not a perfect solution. There is no perfect solution for so serious a fault except the solution that must come from the tease himself, a genuine resolution to be considerate of the feelings and misfortunes of others. In New York some years ago there was a complacent wife who couldn't sufficiently impress all of us, who had suffered in the general financial collapse, with the fact that she and her husband were luckier than ever and richer than ever. “Isn’t it wonderful?” she would babble happily, “Harry iust got out of This in time and into That when it was going to make that sensational rise, and just before the crash he sold our place for three times what it would bring today!”

Hopes for Man
We wish man to be better than he is. We wish him to have more love, more feeling for the beautiful, the great, and the true; that the ideal which he pursues shall be purer, more divine; that he shall feel his own dignity, shall have more respect for his immortal soul. We wish him to have in a faith freely adopted, a Pharos to guide him, and we would have his acts correspond to that faith. —Mazzini.
