NINETY COUNTIES SHOW G.O.P. GAIN
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Jan. 1. —Only two Indiana counties failed to show a substantial gain in the percentage of Republican votes cast in comparison to the total vote of the county in the ; November 5 general election, figures made public by the research department of the Republican State Committee revealed today. In figuring the percentage of the Republican vote the total vote cast for the two major party candidates for President of the United States was used.. Wendell L. Willkie, native , Hoosier, carried Indiana over President Franklin D. Roosevelt by 25,403 votes, out of a total of 1,773,529 votes cast for the two nominees. The two counties which failed •to show an increase in Republican strength were Delaware and Lake counties. However, in the total vote cast for President in the entire state, the Republican candidate had 50.7 per cent as compared to 49.3 per cent for the Democratic nominee. G. O. P. Strength Grow* The percentage of Republican! strength in the 1932 election was only 44 per cent, and in 1936 was 42.5 per cent, an increase of 6,7 per cent in the total vote in 1940 over 1932. In the same period the Democratic percentage dropped from 56 per cent to 49.3 per cent, , There was a difference of 5.4 in favor of the Republican ■Presidential candidate in Delaware county in 1932, but in 1936 the Democratic nominee held an advantage of 4.6 per cent. In the 1940! balloting Willkie held ' 45.8 per -cent of the county’s total Presidential- vote, to 54.2 for Roosevelt. The Republican percentage in, Lake county decreased from 48f* per cent in 1932 to 38.9 in 19401. On the other side of the Repuh>lican ledger, however, Marion county increased its Republican percentage from 47.9 in 1932 to 50.6 in 1940..
