Auctioneer Had No Trouble Obtaining a Higher Bid

At an auction sale, the business was interrupted by a whispered conversation between the auctioneer ,and one of the prospective bidders. At the conclusion the master of ceremonies announced: “A gentleman present tells me that since proceedings started in this ; room he has lost a wallet containing the sum of five hundred dollars. He hereby offers a rew r ard of fifty dollars to anyone for its return.” There was a short period of silence, then one of the members of the crowd nodded his head to the auctioneer and announced: "I bid sixty.”
