Congressman Charlie A. Halleck, who first belongs to Jasper and Newton counties—the chap you sent out that bleak January day, 1934, to represent you in the lower branch of Congress, is coming home as the 1940 campaign swings into the stretch. And over there in Rensselaer on October 24 Home Town will present a gala setting as the bands play, the drum corps march and a foxy trio from Williamsport makers vocal mu sic. And everywhere the Star- and Stripes will flutter and gaiety will be on every, side as the citizens of two counties pay tribute to their favorite son whose romantic rise to leadership in the Halls of Congress at such a comparatively, earlv a is remindful of a Horation Alger story. It’s to present a circus-dav atmosphere, this Homecoming tribute for Charlie Halleck, the Kid from Congress, the hoy from Jasper and Newton counties whose sheer n’dlitv h.*< carried him to national limelight as a dominant factor in the nation!® governmental life within the short space of six years. The testmonial proper will be held at the Rensselaer high school gymnasium starting at 8 o’clock, Thursday, October 24. Preceding the meeting there will be other events of a gala nature, with a parade as the evening’s pieliminary highlight. The high spot of the evening will come with the address of Congressman Halleck sparking the rally. He will not come to you as an orato”, nor as a poiitcal speaker, but as a Home Town Boy who has clmaxed his amazing rise to date by being selected for the high honor of placing the name of Wendell L. Willkie in nomination for the presidency of the United States. And always he rode the winner, has ridden him to the very threshhold of the White House. There are many who believe the Halleck spirit and statesmanship will combine for a performance (if jockeying that will seat that same Wendell L. Wiflkie in the president’s chair.
