WHEATFIELD
(By Bert Vandercar)
Dr. and Mrs. Franklin Petry of Lowell were calling on relatives here Sunday. Kenneth Shafer, the principal of the Wheatfield School attended the principal’s meeting at Rensselaer, Monday evening. The Kentland boys turned the heat on the local team but it did not discourage our athletes but it made them tougher and better able to meet other teams. As iron is made steel by a blast of extreme heat so good athletic teams are developed and hardened by meeting a determined opposition. Our boys will try you again Kentland and it may be a different story. A large number attended the Wright lecture at Rensselaer Friday evening and saw a movie display of the horrors of war, supplemented by able comments. Walter Hoehn and Grover Smith went to Indianapolis Thursday, where the former will be the representative of the Wheatfield No. 689 at the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows that convenes there. Mr. Smith, who l\as attended the grand lodge a number of times, will call on his son Robert, who works there. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lee and Mrs. Solomon were callers at Lafayette, Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Jot Nelson of near Rensselaer were calling on relatives here last Sunday. The political kettle is beginning to simmer but eventually it will probably boil over—when the heat is turned on. The spell binders are comical > birds, that talk and talk about things they don’t understand themselves People read today, they don’t have to be told. Work on the new Harry Nelson •building is being rushed and soon will be completed. The front part of the building will be a barber shop and a Beauty parlor, the back part will be the living quarters. The James Amierson new building is rapidly nearing completion and will, when completed, be a neat business house and as near fire proof as possible. In a short time we will have everything on this side of the street running normal again. Lewis Grube’s tavern is the first of the three to be open for business. Take a peep at the new up-to-date front of the Fendig’s drug store. It is surely a great improvement and speaks well for the business activity of the old home town. % Yes, our school is running along nicely but a little later we expect to see more solid school work done. It takes a little time to get things properly organized and the seasons program devloped and interest in the school work intensified. A strong educational development of the student body is a good foundation for a strong, sturdy type of athletes. Wheatfield has always had a good crew in the athletic section. Let us go, Wheatfield.
