Local Registration Boards Ready for Draft on October 16
Ivan Cheever, Keener township trustee stated yesterday that local draft registration , machinery was oiled and ready to go Wednesday, October 16th when all the men of draft age are required to register for Uncle Sam. Mr. Cheever announced that both precincts will register in the small school building on the school ground in DeMotte. The East precinct will register in the north room the West precinct will register in the south room. Two boards, headed by Marvin R. Bernard and Emmett Erwin and composed of four members each will be on hand to register the men.
If you want to know whether you should register under the Burke-Wads worth Selective Service and Training law on October 16, here’s the answer: Yes, if you're a man between the ages of 21 and 35 inclusive and if you're not already in the armed service. If you are 21 years old on October 16 you register. If you are 21 years old on October 17, you don’t.. However, if you are 36 years old on October 16 you won’t register, but if your 36th birthday falls one day later on October 17, you will be required to register. According so the law, all aliens residing in the United States whether they have signified their intention of becoming citizens or not required to register on Octoberl6, but only those who have expressed their intention of becoming citizens will be accepted foi service. The only jiiens exempted from regisration are those officially connected with foreign embassies and consular services.
Machinery will be set up so that persons who are sick and unable to leave their homes or hospitals will be given an opportunity to register. Those who are away from home on the 16h of October can register any place in the country and the card will be returned to the local board having jurisdiction over the area in which their homes are located. So if you are within the age limits and aren’t already in the armed service, a registrar in your home precinct or in any other precinct in the country will be waiting to fill out a card for you. Incidently, selective service officials say that filling out the card won’t take longer than 15 minutes.
