Around Town
(with Dick) ■ Nominating time is close, and the political picture gradually clears.. There seems little quesion but what Mr. Roosevelt can be renominated for a third term if ho w ishes. He will have close to half of the delegates pledged to him when the convention opens. And, in every primary, he has beaten all other contenders by tremendous margins. On the Republican side, the Dew r ey candidacy has apparently slipped seriously. Few think he has a chance. Taft and Vandenborg are the loading lights now. but it looks as if they may cancel each other. Biggest GOP development is the astonishing rise in general popularity of Wendell Willkie. Mr. Willkie has no machine, no “inside backing”, and no delusions of grandeur. But, in the view of a number of commentators, he is the only possible Republican candidate who could meet the President on an even looting, and have.a teal chance to win the day. 0 Noticed a change in the nature of the local comments on the war situation. Instead of the “wonder if the U. S. can keep ouC’attitude, it is “wonder how long before we’re in
is?” If we stay on our own soil, where we belong, is will be quit* 1 a while before any foreign power will attempt :n invarion. Just consider how long it will take them to replenish their munitions and other necessities of war aftei the present wholesale expenditure of those same items. 1 believe in America because i» it we are itee — free to choose our gov eminent, to speak our minds, to ob* serve our different religion*; Because we are generous with our freedom —we share our rights with those who disagree with us; Because we hate no people anti covet no people’s land; Because we are blessed with a nnt ural and varied abundance; Because we set no limit to a man’s achievement; in mine, factory, field* of service in business or the arts, an able man, regardless of class or creed, can realize his ambition; Because we have great dreams—and because we have the opportunv to make those dreams come tin* —by Wendell Willkie
