U. S. COAST GUARD IS EXPANDING
The United States Coast Guard is expanding and now is accepting young men between the ages of 18 and 25 years for enlistment. Enlistments are being made in the rating of apprentice seaman for a period of three years. Each man enlisted receives free of charge clothing valued at $108.40. Hospitalization and subsistence and quarters are also furnished free to all men in the service. Thirty days leave of absence may be granted to each man yearly with pay. Generally, at the end of 90 days, an apprentice seaman is advanced to the rating of seaman, second class, whose pay is $36.00 per month. Considering the fact that an enlisted man receives subsistence, quarters, medical attention, hospitalization, dental attention and clothing free, this amounts to more than SIOO a month in civil life. Retirement may be had at the end of 20 years or 30 years. A chief petty officer retiring at the end of 30 years receives $133.87 retirement pay per month as long as he lives. Enlisted men may be advanced to the rank of Warrant Officer and Chief Warrant Officer. The top pay and allowances of a Chief Warrtnt Officer is SSOOO a year. Any young man interested in securing a permanent position with a future, in the U. S. Coast Guard, can secure additional information at the office of the Kankakee Valley Post.
