4-H CLUB MEMBERS PRODUCE 10 TONS OF CHOICE BEEF
Jasper county 4-H Beef Club member* produced nearly 10 tons of choice beef during the past year, according to results shown by record books of 25 4-H Beef Calf Club members who fed and showed 38 calves. . Last fall a carload of Hereford calves was shipped in from the west and any boy or girl not having access to beef calves locally could buy calves from this lot, with members of the beef cattle committee purchasing the balance of the calves. According to a summarization of the results from record books turned in by the club members, the calves averaged 483 lbs. on Jan. 1, ’ and 973 lbs. on Aug. 20th, making an average total ain of 490 lbs., or a daily gain of 2.1 lbs. per calf over a period of 232 days. The average initial cost per calf was $45.18, average total feed cost $36.00, and miscellaneous expense $1.92, making a total average cost per calf of $83.10. * Nine of these calves were exhibited at the Indiana state fair and were then sold on the Indianapolis market for 10 ¥2 and 11 cents, mostly 11c. The average cost of trucking and selling expense was $3.27 and the average shrink 40 lbs. per calf, making a total cost of $7.47 for delivering the calf and selling. Other calves were sold at Chicago and some of the boys are holding their calves. According to the boys’ records the average profit per calf in the club was $17.88, counting market value per pound as $.075 per lb., and the necessary average selling prices on the Indianapolis market was $.093 per lb., counting feed prices at average farm prices, trucking, commission and average shink. Asst. County Agent Howard Emme announced today all boys or girls interested in joining the beef calf club for 1940 should see their vocational teacher, local club leader, or register his name and number of each breed of calves he expects £0 feed at the County Agent’s office. The Jasper County 4-H Beef Calf Club Committee, consisting of Jerry Branson, Howard Evans, Chet Bagnall, John Rusk and Arnold Luers have been working on locating a car load of calves for this year’s club work for those boys who want to buy calves.
