In recognition of some ■ei v:cc Chief Washakie of the SI oshone Indians had rendered. General Grant sent him a beautiful silvermounted saddle. It was presented with troops drawn up and a grandiloquent speech by the commanding ollicer * When Washakie was asked if he wished to reply, he shook-his head negatively. “What!” shouted the colonel, “after all you heard you have nothing to say?” The Indian answered: “White man feels with his head; his head has tongue. Indian feels with his heart; heart no tongue.”
