HESSIAN FLY STILL NO. 1 WHEAT FARMER ENEMY
Lafayette, Ind., Sept. 26. —Indiana wheat growers’ No. 1 enemy i still the Hessian fly, J. J. Davis, head of the Purdue University entomollogy department, reported this wc< k. “Not for many years has the northern half of Indiana developed such a heavy fly infestation, - ’ he stated. A catastrophe may develop in this section if wheat grower- fail to maintain the safe free date in sowing wheat this fall.’’ Fly'free dates for Jaspei county are Sept. 24th in the northern one third, Sept. 25th in the areas near Rensselaer, and Sept. 26th for the southern part of the county. According to Mr. Davis, infestation in Jasper county ranged up L» 40 percent with an average of 13 percent for the whole county, the higher infestations running in the south half of the county.
