Born to Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Mid Hart received two bursted fingers during the base ball game Sunday and is taking a few days rest from the bank this week. Mrs. Harry Rathburn was hostess to a four table party Saturday afternoon. High score prize was awarded to Mrs. Al Konosky and second to Mrs. Al Ewart. Mrs. Mid Hart received the consolation prize. At the conclusion of the afternoon the hostess served a lovely luncheon. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. May left for Terre Haute Monday where Mr. May will be enrolled at the State Teachers College for five weeks. Mrs. Otto DeYoung entertained her bridge club last Thursday evening. Mrs. Wm. May, Mrs. L. Bauman and Mrs. Harry Rathburn, Mrs. E. Evans and Mrs. W. Hammerton were guests. Mrs. Rathburn received the high score prize and Mrs. Hammerton received the second. Mrs. Frances Cheever received the consolation. A one course luncheon was served at the conclusion of the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Jaques of Evansville, Ind., spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. J. Barton Cox and attended the World’s Fair. Miss Sabra Sue Cox accompanied them home for a visit. Angie DeHaan has returned to Ball state college at Muncie for summer school. Grace DeHaan and James Benes drove down last Mon day and brought her here. Mrs. Geo. Gregory and Mrs. S. Groet called on Mrs. H. Crawford Friday. Mrs. Geo. Gregory and Mrs. R. Grevenstuk called on Mrs. Rufus McCuskey at Creton Saturday. Mrs. George Gregory and daughter from Merrel, Wis., and Mr. and Mrs. P. Musch and daughter from Chicago, were guests at the R. Grevenstuk home Sunday. Richard Grevenstuk, Jr., Lee Kelley, Hattie Grevenstuk and Olive Abbring went to Medora, Ind., a 250 mile drive to see the stone quarries. They brought Jean Root back with them to spend a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Holliam and daughter, Mr. Kelley and two daughters, from Chicago, visited with Mr. and Mrs. S. Groet Sunday. Geo. Huinzinga, Sr., and sons, Geo. Jr., and Homer, and Miss Mary Lewis from Chicago, spent Tuesday with Mr. and Mrs. S. Groet. George Jr., stayed for a few weeks visit. Another big bam dance at McGlinn’s big barn Saturday night, same high class music and entertainment.
DeMotte A. C.s won another ball game, winning from the strong Gary Devils, a colored team from Gary, seven to one. Strike out Hawley was again on the mound hits. Hart caught a wonderful game but in the last inning he got a bad foul, badly splitting two of his fingers. Hixon caught the rest of the game. Bozeman pitched for the colored boys striking out three men and allowing eight hits. The DeMotte Juniors lost their first game this season to the colored team 3 to 1. A five inning game. Bricker for DeMotte struck out nine men in five innings, but errors behind him lost the game. Rinko, the colored pitcher struck out five men. Paul Bowman, the kid catcher was on the bench with a sore toe. Chod Swisher caught for him, Wm. Burns umpired the kid game and Bill Bahler umpired for the regulars. Yess, Bill Burns called on Miss John of Kouts Monday evening. Alice Van Meertin called on Mr. Huizinga in Chicago Sunday. Bill Burns became lost while returning home from Harvey, Sunday night and drove 70 miles instead of 42. He finally turned the Pontiac loose and it took him to the John home in Kouts before he finally got his bearings. A number from the north end of the county attended the funeral of Mrs. Randa Beeker at Battle Ground last Thursday. Mrs. Beeker lived 14 years on one of the Geo. Cook farms in Wheatfield township. She was a nurse in Indianapolis at the time of her death. A new air lift greasing machine is being installed at Harry’s Filling Station. DeYoung’s are doing the cement work. The worms are taking acres and acres of corn on the low lands north of town causing a lot of fields to be disked up and put to millet. The sportsman A. C.’s of Dunns Bridge who have not been beat this year will play ball at DeMotte next Sunday. The Thayer Fagans, a 12 to 15 year old team, will furnish the opposition for the DeMotte Juniors. All the large trucks on state road 41 are still being run over 53, a new bridge is being built over the Kankakee near Schneider and the temporary bridge will not hold the heavier trucks. All right, Rensselaer, we are still hollering for that base ball game. John McGlinn and Irene Van Ginkle became lost Saturday night, but were finally found and everybody was happy. The Geeza family furnished some good extra entertainment at the barn dance last Saturday night, putting on some good singing and dancing acts. The Wright sisters
also entertained. Barden Tyler was busy meeting old friends at the ball park last Sunday. Miss Dorothy Akers and Mr. RusMiss Helen Curtin is working at Granger’s Grocery, due to the illness of Mrs. Josie Hanaway. Fred McGlinn is mowing along the state road this week. It is reported that his horses just won’t go through town without stopping. Miss Alice Van Meertin has been employed at the John Morgan home for a few days. Evelyn Merritt spent a few days with Ava True this week.
