How Sun Dogs Form
Two sun dogs with a solar halo which were seen around the sun were caused by the reflection of light in ice crystals in the upper air, according to Dr. Jessica M. Young, assistant professor of astronomy at Washing ton university. The phenomenon, although not uncommon, is not often visible in St. Louis, she explained. Clouds partly obscured the halo, and probably a number of sun dogs, because it is often possible to see many of the sun reflections at one time, she said.--St. Louis Globe-Democrat.
